I came to America with five hundred dollars.
When you've counted every dollar you own — twice — you learn what a dollar actually is. Not a number. A week of groceries. A chance. Every dollar entrusted to us is somebody's week, somebody's years of showing up before daylight. We don't treat capital as capital. We treat it as somebody's life, handed to us for a while.
For a while — that's the part that keeps me steady. None of this is ultimately ours. We steward it for a short stretch of a very long story, then hand it on.
But make no mistake about what gets decided in the meantime. Capital is never neutral. Where it goes, neighborhoods rise or empty out, businesses hire or shutter, families get a chance or get squeezed. The future isn't set by speeches — it's set by where money is willing to go, and who it's willing to trust. Being handed any of that is an extraordinary privilege and a weight I feel every week.
So we buy what others write off: notes nobody wanted, buildings nobody finished, companies nobody believed in. Slow, unglamorous, deeply satisfying work — with real people at the end of every file. A borrower who needs someone to pick up the phone. A founder who spent thirty years building something and wants it to outlive him.
Will we make mistakes? Yes. I've learned more in the seasons I'd never have chosen than in all the ones I would have. When we get it wrong, you'll hear it from us first, in plain words, with the fix already in motion.
Will this work matter longer than we're here? Absolutely. Buildings come down. Funds close. Names get forgotten. People don't.
